Herniated Lumbar Disc Injuries Benefit from Chiropractic

Lower back pain is a common ailment, with over half the adult population experiencing it during the last year, and over 10% having frequent bouts of the condition. While various issues may cause lower back pain, a recent study published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics specifically addresses disc herniations in the lumbar spine and the success of various chiropractic methods in treating this condition.

The study investigated those who have had Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to confirm the presence of lumbar disc injuries manifesting as herniated discs in the lower back. It showed that for both chronic and acute cases, chiropractic care was an effective means of treatment. This is particularly positive news, given that studies on other treatment options such as steroid injections have demonstrated an increased risk over 20% for vertebral fractures. It is encouraging to have statistical confirmation of the anecdotal evidence seen in daily practice, that chiropractic care can be effective and less risky than some of the offered alternatives.

The research followed 148 patients with MRI-confirmed herniated lumbar discs, 79 of whom were chronic cases, with their conditions causing back pain, sciatica, and radiating leg syndrome. Whereas prior research showed that without intervention, 36% of patients with this condition improved after two weeks, this study’s findings more than doubled that success rate, with 80% improved after two weeks and over 94% improved after three months. There were significant improvements at every time frame analyzed, up to one year, the duration of the study.
